Beregove on the map, Transcarpathia

Even the hometown is referred to by the locals as "Hungary": Beregas. In 1991, the Berehove district was granted the status of a separate Hungarian autonomous district, which was quickly declared illegitimate. Most locals have been certified as "Hungarians" since 2002, which greatly simplifies border crossings. The city has a Hungarian consulate, the Transcarpathian Hungarian Pedagogical Institute, the Hungarian National Theater named after Julie Yesha, the center of the Transcarpathian Reformed Church. Everywhere you can see small coniferous wreaths wrapped in Hungarian flag ribbons (red, white and green) that adorn the numerous Beregov memorial plaques.
