Ivan Shchur is a legendary figure in the history of pedestrian transport tourism’s in Transcarpathia. He is also called Yanko Derevlyany, because he makes sculptures out of wood. Ironically, it became the prototype for a new mini-sculpture.
Ivan Shchur is the owner of the tourist shelter “V Yanka Derevyalnogo” on the mountain yavornik at an altitude of 1017 meters, which is located nearby Veliky Berezny village.
Ivan Shchur linked his fate with the mountain Yavirnyk in the 1970s. Then he was invited to work as an artist-designer at the camp site. This campsite it was founded in 1936. At the time when Transcarpathia was part of Czechoslovakia, our region has experienced a real boom in Hiking. In the 1930s in the years of Transcarpathia, 17 tourist shelters were set up, to this day only one remains on mount yavornik.
Since 1974 thanks to the efforts of Ivan Shchur two new buildings were built wooden houseand the third one is almost finished. Tourists who pass by it or get lost in the forests of the region Can always count on a warm welcome from yank Derevlyany. Ivan Shchur repeatedly had to search for lost tourists and bring them out of the forest, as a professional lifeguard.
A mini-sculpture of yank Derevlyanom was installed on June 10, 2018 on the territory of the tourist shelter “yavornik”, which is located above the village of Russian Mochar Of the velikobereznyansky district. At the same time, a miniature “Monument to the Transcarpathian tourist”was installed nearby. The author of both mini-masterpieces was Mikhail Kolodko.
