Augustin Voloshin (1874-1945) – an outstanding teacher, political figure, President of the Carpathian Ukraine. He was born on March 17, 1874 in the family of a rural priest in the village of Kelechin in Mezhgorye. This is probably why he chose the path of theology and enlightenment. He studied at the Uzhgorod gymnasium, then at the theological faculty of the Theological Academy. From March 1897, he served as a chaplain in Uzhgorod, in the Tsegolnyansky Church. He continued his education at the higher pedagogical school of Budapest (faculty of mathematics and physics). Immediately after graduation, he began teaching at the Uzhgorod teachers ‘ Seminary (“preparandii”), and eventually became the Director of this institution.

Augustin Voloshin is the author of textbooks on didactics, pedagogy, logic, psychology and physics, published mainly at his own expense. In addition, under the pseudonym ” A. Verkhovinsky ” Voloshin wrote several dramatic works. Wrote in the Ukrainian language, the Ukrainian language was published the newspaper “Science” and «Freedom», as well as the popular pedagogical magazine “Pchelka”. He headed the Pedagogical society of SubcarpathianRus’s, he organized the “Teachers’ community “society and significantly helped the development of the “Prosvita” society.
Augustin Voloshin became a political figure in 1919. He was a member of the provisional Autonomous Board of Subcarpathian Rus, founded and headed Christian-the people’s party, was an Ambassador from it to the Czechoslovak Parliament. A. Voloshin was actively engaged in charity. Once together with his wife Irina he donated 300,000 kronor to Uzhhorod Greek-Catholic the orphanage “New family”, gave the orphanage its own house (now Uzhgorod, vul. Voloshina, 36). He bequeathed all his property to diocesan schools, teachers ‘ seminaries, and other educational institutions and orphanages.
On October 26, 1938, Augustin Voloshin was appointed Prime Minister of the Autonomous government of Subcarpathian Rus. on March 15, 1939, he became President of the independent Carpathian Ukraine. Almost immediately, the new state was occupied by Hungary. Augustin Voloshin, along with other members of the government, emigrated abroad, lived in Prague, and was the Dean and rector of the Ukrainian free University. In March 1945, Voloshin was arrested by the Soviet secret services, and on July 19, 1945, he died in Moscow’s Butyrskaya prison.
Augustin Voloshin is dedicated to the memorial Museum inTranscarpathian Museum of local lore, opened in 2002. And on the beach Uzha there is a monument to this outstanding figure of the Ukrainian people.
