On alpine in the Carpathian valleys, among the ocean of fragrant herbs, yellow gentian grows. Hutsuls call it genjuro or gangurou. The name, of course, reflected the characteristics of the plant, and the pronunciation of “gin-Jura” reminds magic spell. Perhaps it was said together with prayers during the preparation of medicinal decoctions. And today the Carpathians Highlanders telllegends and sing songs about the healing properties of the flower of polonyna.
Decoctions rhizomes and roots of ginzuri were used as a remedy for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic bronchitis, malaria, gout, rheumatism, arthritis of various origin and liver diseases.
It was believed that yellow gentian also has magical properties. Its broth was used by witches to fly on a broom. According to legend they had enough anoint under the armpits with a decoction of this flower. It was also believed that gentian is yellow gives beauty and smoothes wrinkles. It was also used as a love potion.
Yellow gentian is common on high-altitude polonines in Carpathian and in Western Europe. Today, gin Jura is very rare in the Carpathians. The plant is included in the Red book of Ukraine.
