The capital of Hungary, Budapest, is a true paradise for tourists from all over the world. De jure, the city was formed quite recently in 1873 by the unification of the cities of Buda, Óbuda, and Pest. However, the history of settlements in this area spans over 2,000 years. It all began with a small Celtic settlement called Ak-Ink, which existed as early as the 1st century BC. Today, Budapest is the capital of Hungary and a major European tourist center with a population of 1.7 million and an area of over 525 square kilometers.
Thanks to a one-day tour in Budapest, you can enjoy an unforgettable weekend, marveling at numerous architectural landmarks and the incredible views of the mighty Danube River. During the tour, you will see famous Budapest landmarks such as:
– The Royal Palace
– The Medieval Quarter
– Buda Castle
– St. Matthias Church
– Fisherman’s Bastion
– The Parliament Building
– Heroes’ Square
– Andrássy Avenue
– Vajdahunyad Castle
Additionally, shoppers will be in for a treat when visiting Váci Street, which boasts an astronomical number of shops and branded boutiques.
Budapest is also a great destination for spa tours. Visiting local thermal baths such as Széchenyi, Gellért, Rudas, Lukács, and Király is an excellent way to relax and rejuvenate.
From personal experience, I can say that in winter, tourists are attracted to Budapest by the incredible Christmas market, in spring – by the blooming of sakura, and in summer and autumn – by walks along the embankments and boat trips on the Danube.
Professional tour guides, no matter the season, will share many interesting and lesser-known facts about the history of this ancient city.
Nyíregyháza is very popular among Ukrainian tourists in Hungary. With a population of just over 118,000 people and an area of 247 square kilometers, it is architecturally similar to cities in Zakarpattia, such as Uzhhorod and Mukachevo. People from Zakarpattia feel right at home here. When I stroll through the streets of this beautiful Hungarian city, I often get the feeling of déjà vu, as though I’ve seen it somewhere before in Uzhhorod.
Nyíregyháza has a fascinating and long history. The first written mention of this city dates back to 1209. At that time, it was called Nyír (which translates to “birch”). The modern name of the city can be translated as “Birch Church.”
Despite the turbulent history and frequent destructive wars, Nyíregyháza has preserved many valuable historical and cultural landmarks and museums. Most of them are located in the city center.
The most interesting landmarks and museums in the city include:
– The City Hall (1873);
– The Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Neo-Romanesque style (1902-1904);
– The Evangelical Church in the Baroque style (1784-1786);
– The Reformed Church in the Romantic style (1873-1882);
– The Greek Catholic Church of St. Nicholas in the mixed Byzantine style (1897);
– The Synagogue (1923-1924);
– The András Jósa Museum;
– The Open-Air Museum “Sóstó.”
In addition to the landmarks, the city’s cozy parks, healing thermal baths, modern water park, shopping centers, and the vast zoo are also attractive to tourists. In my opinion, the main advantages of tours to Nyíregyháza from Ukraine are its proximity to the border, affordable prices, and a wide range of recreational opportunities.
To experience an incredible thermal spa vacation in Hungary, you must visit the famous resort of Hajdúszoboszló. It is considered the largest spa resort in all of Europe. Here you’ll find the largest artificial pool in Central Europe. Relaxing by the shore of this pool feels like being by the sea. The edges of the pool are equipped with an artificial sandy beach and palm trees, and the pool itself features a special system that simulates sea waves.
In addition to its thermal pools, Hajdúszoboszló offers tourists historical and cultural landmarks and museums, such as:
– St. Laszlo Church from the 18th century.
– The Greek Catholic Church in Byzantine style, built in 1994.
– The Catholic Church on Bocskaï Street, dating back to 1776.
– The Reformed Church at Kálvin Square, built on a 15th-century foundation.
– The István Bocskaï City Museum.
– The Architecture and Folk Life Museum.
– The Hajdú Museum of Folk Art.
– The Art Gallery.
– The Bell Tower and painted trees.
Additionally, Hajdúszoboszló features a lovely park for walking, as well as cozy cafes and restaurants offering spicy Hungarian dishes and incredible local wines.
Debrecen is the second largest city in Hungary. It is a true revolutionary capital of Hungary, where the spirit of freedom and liberty can be felt everywhere. In their love for freedom, the people of Debrecen resemble Ukrainians. It is no coincidence that even Debrecen’s flag is blue and yellow.
Debrecen has a long and glorious history, with historical and architectural landmarks and museums being silent witnesses to this. The most famous of them include:
– University of Debrecen (established in 1538);
– Déri Museum;
– the historical hotel Aranybika (Golden Bull), built in 1915;
– the Cathedral of St. Anne, built in 1715;
– the Reformed Church in Debrecen;
– the ancient medieval windmill.
In addition, in Debrecen, visitors can enjoy healing in the therapeutic thermal baths, take walks through the city’s picturesque parks, and taste the dishes of the flavorful Hungarian cuisine. A great place for this is the local Great Forest Park with the “Aquaticum” thermal complex.
In my opinion, the main tourist feature of Debrecen is its unofficial status as the “Hungarian Mediterranean,” earned thanks to the unique healing thermal waters. This is a great alternative to seaside vacations.
From personal experience, I can say that the Hungarians make every effort to ensure the tourists have the most comfortable vacation. Hospitality and friendliness are felt everywhere.
