Overview

Among the various options for day trips from Uzhhorod , a trip to Kosice is one of the most attractive for tourists. The main advantage of a day trip to Kosice from Uzhhorod is the geographical proximity of this charming city. The distance from Uzhhorod to Kosice is only about 100 km.

Kosice is the second largest city in Slovakia, and in terms of the number of historical and architectural monuments, it is a real champion not only in Slovakia but also in the entire Carpathian region. The central part of the city was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List back in 2002.

Our walking tour of the historic centre of Kosice will introduce you to many interesting, mysterious and little-known pages of its history. The local historical and cultural sights are extremely photogenic, so we always make stops for photo shoots so that every tourist can take plenty of great photos.

Main programme

The most important sights of the city of Kosice can be found on Hlavná ulica. This street is a real symphony of European architecture. Neatly paved cobblestones, a picturesque brook, old buildings, charming fountains and cosy squares make this street an ideal location for leisurely walks. Another feature of this street is the huge number of cosy cafes and restaurants with excellent service and delicious food and drinks.

The main historical and cultural attraction of Kosice is undoubtedly the famous masterpiece of Gothic architecture – St Elizabeth’s Cathedral. It is the largest church in all of Slovakia. This majestic church was built over two centuries (1345-1508). The frescoes and sculptures inside the church are striking in their beauty and perfection. It was in this church that the remains of the heroic Hungarian prince Ferenc II Rákóczi were reburied in 1906.

During our tour, we will also be able to admire the incredible interior of the State Theatre (late 19th century) in Kosice. The ceiling of this landmark is decorated with picturesque images of scenes based on Shakespeare’s works.

During the tour, we will also be able to get acquainted with other historical and cultural attractions of the city, such as:

  • Yakaba Palace (1899);
  • St Michael’s Chapel (first half of the 14th century);
  • St Urban’s Tower (built at the turn of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries);
  • Levotsky House (a tavern dating back to 1569);
  • Synagogue on Zvonarska Street (1883);
  • Plague column (1725);
  • Dominican Church (the oldest building in Kosice in the 13th century)

In addition to historical and architectural monuments, tourists are attracted to Kosice by its beautiful parks with fountains. In this regard, the incredible singing fountain in the heart of the city is a real magnet for travellers.

To satisfy your hunger and taste the local cuisine, you should stop for lunch at the famous Kosice restaurant ‘12 Apostles’. The luxurious interior, cosy atmosphere and excellent staff will make your lunch unforgettable. You will have to pay from 8 to 20 euros for a meal in this restaurant.

After lunch, you can go shopping. To do this, you can visit the huge Optima shopping centre or stroll through the shops located in the old houses of the historic centre of Kosice.

After an active shopping day, you should definitely visit the local pastry shops. Kosice impresses with a large number of excellent pastry shops where you can taste delicious cakes and strudels. We recommend visiting the famous Aida cafe, which is famous for its incredible pastries. The prices here are extremely affordable, and the taste of the pastries and cakes is simply incredible.

At the end of our visit to Kosice, we will visit the incredible Kosice Zoo with its cool dinosaur park. This huge 292-hectare zoo is the largest in Slovakia and the third largest in Europe.
