Overview

Among the various options for day trips from Uzhhorod, a trip to Košice is one of the most attractive for tourists. The main advantage of a day trip to Košice from Uzhhorod is the geographical proximity of this charming city. The distance from Uzhhorod to Košice is only about 100 km.

Košice is the second largest city in Slovakia, and in terms of the number of historical and architectural monuments, it is a true champion not only in Slovakia but also in the entire Carpathian region. The central part of the city was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002.

Our walking tour of the historic center of Košice will introduce you to many interesting, mysterious, and little-known pages of its history. Local historical and cultural monuments are extremely photogenic, so we always make stops for photo sessions so that every tourist can take as many wonderful photos as they want.

Main program

The most important sights of Košice can be found on Hlavná Street (Hlavná ulica). This street is a true symphony of European architecture. Neatly laid cobblestones, a picturesque stream, ancient buildings, charming fountains, and cozy squares make this street an ideal location for leisurely walks. Another feature of this street is the huge number of cozy cafes and restaurants with excellent service and delicious food and drinks.

The main historical and cultural landmark of Košice is undoubtedly the famous masterpiece of Gothic architecture – St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral. It is the largest church in Slovakia. This majestic church was built over two centuries (1345-1508). The frescoes and sculptures inside the church are impressive in their beauty and perfection. It was in this church that the remains of the heroic Hungarian prince Ferenc II Rákóczi were reburied in 1906.

During our tour, we will also be able to admire the incredible interior of the State Theater (late 19th century) in Košice. The ceiling of this landmark is decorated with picturesque images of scenes based on Shakespeare’s works.

During the tour, we will also be able to explore other historical and cultural landmarks of the city, such as:

  • Yakaba Palace (1899);
  • St. Michael’s Chapel (first half of the 14th century);
  • St. Urban’s Tower (built at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries);
  • Levotsky House (tavern from 1569);
  • Synagogue on Zvonarska Street (1883);
  • Plague Column (1725);
  • Dominican Church (the oldest building in Košice, 13th century)

In addition to historical and architectural monuments, tourists in Košice are attracted by magnificent parks with fountains. In this regard, the incredible singing fountain in the heart of the city is a real magnet for travelers.

To satisfy your hunger and taste the local cuisine, stop for lunch at the famous Kosice restaurant “12 Apostles.” The luxurious interior, cozy atmosphere, and wonderful staff will make your lunch unforgettable. Lunch at this restaurant will cost between €8 and €20.

After lunch, shopping awaits you. You can visit the huge Optima shopping center or stroll through the shops located in the old buildings of the historic center of Košice.

After an active shopping spree, be sure to visit the local pastry shops. Košice impresses with its large number of wonderful cafes and pastry shops where you can taste delicious cakes and strudels. We recommend visiting the famous Aida cafe, which is renowned for its incredible pastries. The prices here are very reasonable, and the taste of the cakes and pies is simply incredible.

At the end of our visit to Košice, we will visit the incredible Košice Zoo with its cool dinosaur park. This huge zoo, covering an area of 292 hectares, is the largest in Slovakia and the third largest in Europe.
