Tour programme

Day 1 (Monday)

– 9:00 a.m Meeting with the guide at the hotel. Departure from Uzhgorod.
– A countryside excursion to Lumshory: a bath in vats.
– Excursion to Nevytsky Castle. According to legend, young brides of noble families were buried there, away from public view. It is believed that the castle was built before the appearance of the Hungarians in Transcarpathia around the eighth century. The stronghold has undergone four major reconstructions, and the main architectural ensemble was formed in the middle of the fifteenth century. Around this time, a moat appeared around the castle, which was constantly filled with running water. This is a unique hydraulic engineering structure of the Middle Ages, because at that time it was a great achievement to supply water to a moat at a height. Only two such systems have been found in Central Europe, and they were built much later. In 1644, during the religious wars, the fortress was destroyed by the Transylvanian governor György II Rákóczi. Since then, only the mysterious ruins remind us of the former greatness of the impregnable fortress.
– The ancient mountain village of Lumshory: bathing in vats (extra charge – from 100 UAH / person)
– A short walk to the beautiful Solovey and Partizan waterfalls (Davir), and, most importantly, bathing in vats on an open fire with hydrogen sulphide water on the banks of a mountain river. It is a fantastic pleasure that Peter the Great’s ambassadors wrote about when they were crossing the Carpathians. A huge cast-iron vat, with a capacity of about 2000 litres, stands in the middle of a roofless wooden hut. It is filled with mineral water and heated with wood over an open fire. There are several stones in the vat. You get inside (5-6 people), and the hospitable host puts wood on the fire and cooks you over low heat. As soon as you feel your blood start to boil (although the water is actually heated to no more than +45°C), jump out! A few steps away is an icy mountain stream, you jump in with your head and back into the vat. Both in summer and winter, the procedure takes place in the open air.
– Lunch-tasting of Transcarpathian cuisine: 16 dishes + plum cake from local grandfather Mykhailo (surcharge – 250 UAH / person)
– 5:00 p.m – Estimated time of arrival in Uzhgorod.

Since 2002, the Bartosz family of artists, who rented the castle, has been trying to breathe life into it and resurrect it with their own resources: the 17th-century furniture and stained-glass windows have been restored, enthusiasts are carrying out restoration work, and a museum exhibition and art gallery have been opened.
