Protected areas of Transcarpathia
There are 456 nature reserves in the Transcarpathian region covering an area of 177 thousand hectares. Tourists from all over the world come to the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, Uzhansky National Nature Park, Synevyr and Zacharovanyi Krai National Nature Parks, and Prytysyanskyi and Synyak Regional Landscape Parks. The region also has 60 nature reserves, 340 natural monuments, 9 protected tracts, 32 monuments of landscape art and 4 arboretums. Each of these protected areas is unique in its own way.
The Carpathian Biosphere Reserve was established in 1968 and has been a member of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Network since 1992. Almost 2.5% of the Ukrainian Carpathians are under its protection.
As for the Uzhansky National Nature Park, it is an integral part of the trilateral Polish-Slovak-Ukrainian International Biosphere Reserve “Eastern Carpathians”.
The creation of the Synevyr National Park is connected with the need to preserve the picturesque mountain lake.
The first reserves in Transcarpathia appeared in the early twentieth century. And today their number is growing and their territories are expanding.
