Voyevodyn Waterfall

The Transcarpathian waterfalls will not surprise a seasoned traveller; they cannot be compared in height and power to the world-famous ones, but they are nevertheless a bright decoration of our region.

The most powerful Transcarpathian waterfall is Voyevodyn, which is located 12 kilometres north of the village of Turya Polyana Uzhgorod district at an altitude of 600 metres. The waterfall is formed by the Voyevodyn stream (river), which flows from the top of the Polonyny Runa (1482 metres) and flows through a deep tract, merging with the Shypit River.

Apparently, the waterfall was formed as a result of an earthquake, which split the rock and formed a beautiful waterfall that flows in two streams into a small lake.

Origin of the name “Voyevodyn”

There are several versions of the origin of the name of the Voyevodyn waterfall. According to one of them, its name comes from the word “voivode”. The supporters of this version claim that the waterfall was named in honour of the leaders of the military units of Kyivan Rus who went on campaigns through the Carpathian passes.

According to the second hypothesis, the name of the waterfall comes from the words “war” and “wars”. Indeed, throughout history, these places have seen many bloody wars, and the falling water to some extent symbolises the huge bloodshed in these lands. However, the vast majority of researchers derive the name of the Voyevodyn waterfall from the word “howl”. So its name means water that howls. Here, analogies with the origin of the name of the Shipot waterfall immediately come to mind. If we compare it in this way, this waterfall does not whisper, but rather howls.

This comparison has an objective basis. The speed and power of the flow of the Voyevodyn waterfall is enormous. The total height of its cascades reaches 24 metres, and the main cascade is 5-6 metres high.

According to scientists, the gorge from which the water flows was formed as a result of a huge ancient earthquake.

How to get to Voyevodyn Waterfall: routes

This waterfall is not as popular among tourists as the famous Shipot. And that’s because it’s much harder to get here. There are two most popular routes. One can be reached in 4-6 hours on foot from the village of Zhdeniyevo. The second option is a hike from the village of Turya Polyana.

To get to the Voyevodyn waterfall from the village of Turya Polyana, you should walk along the stream to the manor ” Shypіt”, where you need to turn right and walk along the tourist trail for about 4 kilometres. The road to the waterfall is not difficult and can be easily overcome even with children. It will only take a few hours to get to Vojvodina.

Compared to Shypіt, Voyevodyn has a much smaller number of tourists, which makes visiting it more cosy and relaxing. Here you can forget about all the troubles and immerse yourself in thoughts and dreams. And taking photos here is simple and easy, because no one interferes and does not suddenly climb into the frame, as on Shypіt. This is definitely one of the gems among the Transcarpathian waterfalls.
