The Turya River, flowing through Perechyn, marks the border between the volcanic and folded Carpathians. The city is located on several terraces of natural origin. Not far from its center, the Turya flows into the Uzh River. It is believed that the confluence of two water arteries gave impetus to the name of the city. The main part of its territory is occupied by hills and only a small part of it is located in the valley.

There used to be a lake in the center of Perechyn. The first mention of it dates back to the end of the 14th century, and almost a quarter of a century later it appears again. Historians are sure that the area has a much more ancient origin. They discovered dated to the middle of the 13th century. a record that refers to the land of the rich Perech. It is possible that the name of the city comes from his name.

At first it was considered an ordinary settlement, then it acquired the status of a village, and in the middle of the 20th century. became a district center and an urban-type settlement. At the beginning of March 2004, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine granted it the status of a city.

Temples of Perechyn

For those who have come to Perechyn, the rest must necessarily include a visit to the stunning temples. The most famous of them are the Greek-Catholic Cathedral of St. Nicholas and the Roman-Catholic Church of St. Augustina.

Греко-католицький храм св. Миколи

Greek Catholic Church of St. Nikolay

The Greek-Catholic Church of St. Nicholas is located in the center of Perechyn. The date of its foundation is considered to be the 18th century. In the middle of that century, there is a record of a local wooden Greek-Catholic church in the chronicles.

Then, from 1763 to 1769, a stone basilica was built in the center of the city on the hill of Hurka. Next to it, at the beginning of the next century, a single-tier bell tower with rare bells was erected.

The period 1867-1902 was marked by the ministry of priest Gavriil Chopei in the cathedral. With him, the interior decoration of the church was renewed and 3 bells were bought.

Those who came to Perechyn will find something to see here. The landmark for finding this cathedral is the presence of two towers. It was closed during the Soviet rule, but in 2002, after reconstruction, it became available again for visiting and holding religious services. Today, there is an active church here, where the relics of St. Mykola Myrlikiiskyi. The relic attracts pilgrims from all over the world.

Roman Catholic Church of St. Augustine

Tourists usually do not puzzle over where to go in Perechyn.

At the foot of the Hurka hill is the Roman Catholic church of St. Augustyn, who celebrated his hundredth birthday in 2006.

By the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Perechyn was already a large industrial center with railway connections. In 1893, the Bantlin chemical plant was established here. Accordingly, the foreign population of the region, which numbered approximately 700 Catholics, also increased.

In 1902, they founded their community and wanted to have their own Roman Catholic church. Before that, they were parishioners of the Greek Catholic Church of St. Nikolay

In 1905, the Italian Francesco Gayotto bought land for the construction of a new cathedral. The plant allocated 10,000 kroner for its construction, other funds were collected by the parishioners.

The foundation and walls of the church were made of stone brought from Suhy Potok and Teploya Yamka. K. Santo and his sons, M. Yakiv, F. Gayotto, etc. were also engaged in construction. Altars, doors, windows and benches were made in the carpentry workshop of A. Goyer.

The church was built in the eclectic style that prevailed in France in the 19th century, and was opened in 1906 on the day of St. Augustina. Its height is 34 m and it has 3 bells at its disposal. There is also an organ and a sacristy. The body of the instrument was made in the 19th century, and the details were made in the first third of the 20th century.

During the Soviet era, the church experienced difficult times. But the parishioners tried to save everything they could. They took two crosses outside the cathedral and hid them in different places. They have survived to this day.

In 1991, religious life in Perechyn was revived, and from 1993 the church again became a place of worship for parishioners from Slovakia.

What else to see in Perechyn?

Хресна дорога та пам’ятки природи передмість Перечина

The Way of the Cross and natural sights in the suburb of Perechyn

At the entrance from the Uzhhorod side, a high hill with a large wooden cross can be seen. A few years ago, a “way of the cross” was made here with classic evenly spaced chapels. It starts from the cemetery, which is located in the neighborhood of the ancient stone temple near the center of Perechyn. The road is strewn with stone, drainage is built on it and the slope is strengthened.

The hill is an ideal vantage point from which to survey the panorama of the surrounding area.

On the left, unfortunately, visible “retorts” of the chemical plant are functioning, destroying the ecology of the region. Because of them, many inhabitants of the city of Perechyn suffer from allergies and diseases of the respiratory system, and the air is saturated with the smell of acetic acid.

It is not far from the Sinatoriya ridge to the wonderful rocks of Sokiltsia, next to which is the cave of Ur. And the Klokotyva River flows near them.

On the right is the village of Vorochevo, where robbers lived in ancient times. They robbed merchants passing by the road between Perechyn and Uzhhorod.

The peaks of Synatoria can be seen from above. One of them contains the famous landmark of the region, which is the “Leaky Stone”. It is a rock formation with a hole inside. In front of it is the glorified “Balcony”. The forest meadow located on it allows you to look at the wonderful landscape of the valley.

Below is the Antalovetska glade, which is the mouth of a former volcano, and the Vorochiv lakes. Mount Svitylnik rises in the distance, on the tip of which the robbers’ grotto falls into view.

Лавандова гора

Another leader among well-known local attractions is the luxurious Lavender Field (Perechyn).

The farm located here occupies eight hectares of indescribable beauty and the smell of purple flowers. It has been operating since 2020, and its owners adopted the experience of farmers in Bulgaria, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia.

Now the mountain is a place of stunning flowering of narrow-leaved lavender with a hectare of Daman rose.

Pictures of the place are often posted on social networks. It has practically become one of the visiting cards of the Perechyn neighborhood. You can’t go past such a riot of flowers on any road without lingering for a long time. And a stunning photo session will forever remain not only a memory, but also a souvenir that you will want to return to even after many years.

Краєзнавчий музей Перечина

Perechyn Museum of Local Lore

For a closer acquaintance with the life and history of the city’s inhabitants, you should definitely visit the local history museum, which has been open since May 2019.

Its exposition consists of objects donated to the institution by residents of the region and are real monuments of the history that took place in the region. Therefore, it is not surprising that the residents nicknamed the institution the “Museum of one street”, since the exhibition is like the Gradska, or central artery of the city.

A tour of the museum includes a reproduction of the chronicle of Perechin, perceived through the prism of the peoples who inhabited it. The daily life of Ukrainians, Hungarians, Jews, Italians, Germans, Slovaks and Czechs is presented here.

Great attention is paid to the ancient names and origins of streets associated with the Ukrainian, Hungarian, Italian, Swabian and other periods of the city’s history.

Italians and Swabians are credited with building roads, a local factory, a section of railway tracks from Budapest to Lviv, and churches with the church of St. Augustina.

It will also be interesting to listen to the story about the opening of the first pharmacy and the people who influenced the development and fate of the region. Therefore, a tour of the museum must be included in the plan of recreation with children in Perechyn.

Скульптури та скульптурки Перечина

Sculptures of Perechyn

In 2003, a bronze monument to Fyodor Feketi was erected in the city center, which became one of the most famous monuments.

The depicted person lived here from 1791 to 1838, and his relatives still live in Turya Remet. For more than three dozen years, he worked as a postman, walking at least 25 km to the branch every day, and then the same distance back to the village. To understand his work, it is worth saying that 50 km per day is a distance that exceeds the length of a marathon distance.

Fedor usually cut his way along secret paths. One winter, he went out on the ice of the Turitsa River, fell in and died of a cold. Grateful fellow villagers erected a monument in his honor and hung a memorial plaque outside the local church. Even now there is an inscription: “In memory of the benevolence, sober lifestyle, diligence and honesty of Fedor Feketa, who died in 1838.”

It is believed that fate itself led him to choose such a specialty. The boy’s father went to work in the USA, and the child was constantly waiting for news from him. Later, the young man himself decided to become a postman in order to speed up his return home. There was always a lot of work, so such workers were always very respected.

Nowadays, no one wanted to embarrass such a famous colleague. That is why even now the Perechina post office is considered the best in the country.

In 2010, the largest horseshoe sculpture in Ukraine was installed in the city. Its height is 2550 mm, and its width is 2015 mm. The stone base is approximately 1 m long. The monument was made in A. Putrashyk’s “Three Ivany” forge.

In the winter of 2016, a statue of Nicholas the Wonderworker, the patron saint of the poor and destitute, appeared in Perechyn, who is the patron saint of the city.

In the spring of the following year, the first mini-sculpture “Frog” by M. Kolodka was established here. The sculpture tells about the culinary history of animal paws. After the Napoleonic wars, captive Frenchmen stopped at Turya Remet, who preferred such exotic dishes.

At the end of the following year, a mini-composition “House of the Tooth Fairy” was opened in Perechyn next to a 200-year-old oak tree on City Day.
