From the village. Mizhhirya The lake is 32 kilometres away. The way to it is a very picturesque, but not entirely comfortable road. Therefore, it is best to get to this place by your own SUV. The road runs alongside the Volovets stream, then you should turn sharply to the right and climb into the mountains along the picturesque Synevyr Pass, which is located at an altitude of 800 metres. You should stop at the top and admire the incredible beauty of the Carpathians! To the west, you can see the charming Borzhavska Polonyna, to the south is the Pastushyi Verkh ridge, to the southeast you can see Mount Strymba (1719 metres high), and to the north is the majestic Kamyanka Mountain (1578 metres).
Somewhere down below, like a scattered necklace of pearls, the snow-white houses of the village of Synevyr are strung on the blue ribbon of the Tereblya River. A whole cascade of artificial barriers has been built on this river, providing favourable conditions for trout breeding, which is the main Carpathian fish delicacy.
Temperature on the Synevyr now:
The road to Synevyr runs parallel to the Tereblya River. We leave behind the small village of Synevyrska Polyana with a population of 1354 people and the 18th-century Church of the Intercession, which is known to connoisseurs of sacred wooden architecture.
After another four kilometres uphill, we will see the tourist centre “Synevyr”. This means that there is only one and a half kilometres of road left to reach the coveted lake, which is worth covering on foot. Behind the trees, incredible mountain views are already reflected on the surface of the clear water. On the shores of the Sea Eye there is a wooden hotel, a restaurant and several gazebos.
Entrance to the territory of Lake Synevyr is paid. However, the prices for visiting this picturesque attraction are very affordable. For adults, the price is 60 UAH, for children – 30 UAH, and an additional 75 UAH is required to enter the lake by car. The money goes to the account of the Synevyr National Nature Park, where the magical lake is located.
If you wish, you can take a wooden raft to the centre of the lake, where there is a small island.
Scientists believe that Lake Synevyr was formed immediately after the end of the Ice Age about 10,000 years ago. As a result of a strong earthquake, mountain rocks rose along the path of the waterway and became an impenetrable dam for it.
The surface area of the lake was measured at seven hectares, its maximum depth is estimated at 22 metres and its average depth is 8.2 metres. Lake Synevyr is a huge reservoir of fresh water, estimated at 400,000 cubic metres. The lake is home to two species of fish – the naked carp and the trout.
Due to the lack of chlorides, the water in the lake has an unusual taste. In summer, the sun warms the water only to +20°C, but if you dive deeper, you will be unpleasantly surprised by the extreme coolness. The water temperature here is four to five degrees Celsius. The calm waters of the lake reflect the Blue and Vyr figures created in 1984 by sculptors Ivan Brovdi and Mykhailo Sanich.
The lake, which has been fascinating with its beauty since ancient times, has given rise to surprisingly poetic legends. These are stories about the ocean of love and the sharp rocks of suffering.
The lake has always attracted creative people. Some paint unforgettable landscapes, others come up with poetic lines, and for some, the lake becomes a great place for filming. The lake inspired Ukrainian artists to shoot the film Synevyr. In addition, in 2019, scenes were filmed on Lake Synevyr for the film In Cold Blood, starring French actor Jean Reno.
There is a second legend that explains the origin of the lake’s second name, which is also full of love suffering. Once upon a time, the flock of a young shepherd Ivan was gnawed by wolves. The shepherd realised that he could not expect any mercy from the count, so he decided to flee from the inevitable punishment. He said goodbye to his beloved and set off for foreign lands. The shepherd was sad in a foreign land, and every night he went to the seashore and said: “All-powerful sea, at least look at my native land with one eye, give me a bow to my native land!” The element heard the shepherd’s prayer, broke through the mountains and swallowed the count and his servants into the waters. And she looked at the proud Carpathians and decided to stay here forever with a pure sea eye.
