Long ago there lived two twin brothers. They fell in love with one Hutsul girl, the highlander liked them, both were handsome. It was hard to make a choice. The girl asked the boys to give her time to think about it. In the end, the Hutsul woman suggested that the brothers bring her a silk braid as a gift. The one who would be the first to cope with this difficult task would get her hand and heart. The young men set off in search of the edelweiss.
They went to the mountains, where they met an old shepherd. They told him about the girl and the search for the silk braid. The old man advised them not to risk their lives, to be more prudent, and showed them the dried edelweiss flowers, which he agreed to give them for free. But the proud young men refused, because they thought it was not nice to deceive their beloved Hutsul woman. The shepherd told them how to get to the steep cliffs where the flower grew.
The brothers rushed to the cliff, outrunning each other, and quickly ran to the cliff. Both brothers were determined to be the first. As soon as they touched the flower, the rock collapsed and they both fell to their deaths.
The beautiful Hutsul woman waited for the boys for several days. Finally, worried about their fate, she climbed high into the mountains, looking for their trail. When she reached the rocks, she saw her brothers dead. Unable to bear this tragedy, the Hutsul woman threw herself from the mountain into the precipice.
Since then, the mountain, which consists of three peaks, has been called the Gemini by the Hutsuls. The next day after this tragic incident, gendarmes arrived in the picturesque area to investigate the causes of the death of the twin brothers and the beautiful Hutsul woman. After interrogating an old shepherd who told them about the causes of the young people’s deaths, the gendarmes were petrified. Since then, the three rocky mountains located near Blyznytsia have been called Gendarmes by the Hutsuls.
