Unforgettable places that every tourist should visit

When choosing what to see in Yasinya, we recommend paying attention to the local historical and cultural attractions. First of all, these are:

Струківська дерев'яна церква

You should start your sightseeing in Yasinya with the wooden Church of the Ascension, which locals call the Strukivska Church in honour of the legendary founder of the village. This masterpiece of Hutsul wooden architecture (built in 1824) is one of the most perfect in the whole of Ukraine. In 2013, the unique little church was even included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The church is located in a secluded spot on the picturesque banks of the Chorna Tysa River, just three kilometres from the centre of Yasinya.

Преображенська дерев’яна церква у Ясіні

Transfiguration wooden church

The wooden Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord is located on the outskirts of Yasinya in the cemetery between the main road and the railway near the village of Lazeshchyna. This masterpiece of Hutsul architecture is included in the register of architectural monuments of national importance. Historians believe that the Church of the Transfiguration was built in 1780 in Yablunytsia, and later (in 1871) it was moved to its current location in the Plytovatyi tract. That is why the church is sometimes also called the Plitovatska church.

Дерев'яна церква Жінок Мироносиць (храм Святого Архістратига Михаїла)

Wooden Church of the Myrrh-Bearing Women (Church of St Michael the Archangel)

In the village of Yasinya Stebnyi, there is another example of Hutsul wooden sacred architecture – the Church of the Myrrh-Bearing Women. It was built in 1856. At the time, it belonged to the Greek Catholic community and was called the Church of the Holy Archangel Michael. After the arrival of Soviet rule in the 1960s, the church was closed. Later, the church was turned into a museum and restored. Worship services in the local shrine resumed only in 1989. Today the church is called the Church of the Myrrh-Bearing Women. In 2016, the church was rebuilt, which significantly changed its authentic appearance. There is a wooden 2-tiered bell tower next to the church.

Церква Покрови Пресвятої Богородиці у Ясіні

Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary

In the village of Yasinya, you should definitely visit the stone church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The architectural monument was built in 1903 by the local Greek Catholic community.

On the facade of the church you can see a clock, but it is not a real one, it is painted.

Костел святих апостолів Петра і Павла у Ясіні

Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul

At the end of the tour of the Yasinya churches, it is worth visiting the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. The Roman Catholic parish in Yasinya was founded in 1785 by woodcutters from Lower Austria. At first, they had only a temporary church. They built the present-day large Peter and Paul Church in 1814 at the expense of funds allocated from the royal treasury. The tower of the church is decorated with a real clock and crowned with a complex dome. The interior includes wooden benches. There are small paintings on the ceiling, and several wooden figures of saints and an organ are installed under the walls.

Старовинний єврейський цвинтар у Ясіні

Ancient Jewish cemetery (kirkut)

Yasinya was once home to a large Jewish community, but in 1944 it was almost entirely exterminated in German concentration camps. In memory of the Jews of Yasynya, a large cemetery, founded in the nineteenth century, remains in the village. The area of the cemetery is about 5000 m2.

Several hundred stone matzevah gravestones have been preserved here. On some of them, you can read the names of the deceased, the date of death according to the Jewish calendar, as well as cipher-like inscriptions that tell about the occupation and righteous deeds of the deceased.

Скульптури в селищі Ясіня

Sculptures in the village of Yasinya

There are several different sculptures in the village of Yasinya, which can be divided into 2 parts. The first part includes monuments of the Soviet era (a memorial stele to the hero of the Soviet Union Rasul Isetov, a monument to Oleksa Borkaniuk, and a monument to an unknown soldier). The second part includes sculptures from the period of Ukraine’s independence. Among them, it is worth visiting the monument to Stepan Klochurak and the Ukrainian People’s Council in Yasinya, the monument to the Klympush brothers erected in 1997, the memorial cross to UPA soldier Bohdan Kuvik, and the monument to the Heavenly Hundred.

Залишки лінії Арпада в Ясіні

Remains of the Arpad line in Yasinya

One of the most powerful lines of fortifications during the Second World War ran through the Carpathians and went down in history as the Arpad Line. The village of Yasinya was home to the most fortified sections of the Arpad Line, which were called the Kereshmezh defensive hub. The strongholds were adapted to a circular defence and had artillery positions and command posts.

Етно-парк «Полонина Перці» в Яблуниці

A trip to this area should be complemented by an excursion to the Polonyna Pertsi ethno-park, which is located 15 km from Yasinya in the village of Yablunytsia. This wonderful tourist location provides an opportunity to get to know the Hutsul culture. In addition to viewing antiquities, tourists are offered participation in first-class workshops and tastings of eco-products. In addition, there are gazebos with barbecue facilities. All of this together creates excellent conditions for admiring the nearby mighty Carpathian Mountains.

Features of spring and summer holidays

In spring and summer, Yasinya offers a wide variety of recreational options. The most popular among them is undoubtedly mountain hiking. Yasinya is a launching pad for many different routes covering the Skydovetskyi and Chornohirskyi ranges. From here you can admire the incredible scenery of the highest mountains of Ukraine. Experienced guides can offer tourists in Yasinya both simple routes for beginners and families with children, and real multi-day exhausting marathons for extreme sportsmen. However, the most popular routes for hiking from Yasinya are those that lead to the highest peak of Ukraine – Mount Hoverla.

For those who do not want to or cannot spend a lot of energy on long hikes in the mountains, mushroom and berry excursions in the nearby forests are an alternative option for holidays in Yasinya in spring, summer and early autumn. The surrounding virgin forests are a real Klondike for quiet hunting.

For lovers of quiet unity with nature, fishing in local reservoirs and trout farms is a great way to spend time in Yasinya in spring and summer.

In the warm season, Yasinya is a real paradise for lovers of adrenaline and extreme recreation. At this time, people are actively engaged in cycling, rafting, quad biking or horseback riding, and if you go to the nearby Dragobrat, you can also go paragliding and hang gliding.

Features of rest in autumn and winter

Early autumn is the best time for excursions to the historical and cultural attractions of Yasinya. It is at this time that the absence of heat and the hype of ski holidays makes walking around the village as comfortable as possible. And thanks to local experienced guides, you will learn a lot about the history, customs and traditions of the local Hutsuls.

In autumn, Yasinya is also a great location for mushroom and berry excursions. Thanks to local guides, tourists can gather a huge amount of healing gifts of nature.

In autumn and winter, Yasinya is a great place for skiing holidays. Most skiing fans use Yasinya as a base with cheap accommodation for skiing on the slopes of the famous Dragobrat ski resort. Dragobrat is only 12 km away from Yasinya.

However, some of the holidaymakers ride on the ski slopes of the village itself. Yasinya has two ski slopes equipped with drag lifts. In my opinion, they are perfect for skiers who have only recently mastered this type of recreation. A significant advantage of the slopes in Yasinya is that there is no such full house as on Dragobrat or Bukovel, which makes skiing safer and easier. These slopes are a good option for beginners who have only recently learnt to ski or snowboard. Unlike Dragobrat, it’s less crowded, so it’s much safer to ski here. Even on the busiest days, the queues at the ski slopes in Yasinya do not exceed 10 minutes. On the slopes of Yasinya you can ski, snowboard, sled and even snowmobile. The ski season in Yasinya usually starts in November and lasts until May. Prices for ski lifts, equipment rental and instructor services in Yasinya are extremely affordable. In addition, one of the best children’s ski schools in the whole of Ukraine is located in Yasinya.

Another great way to relax and improve your health in Yasinya in autumn and winter is to visit the local saunas, baths and especially vats. I would advise you to visit first of all vats of Yasinya. They are easier to tolerate than saunas or baths, and the fresh air and view of the Carpathians make this procedure simply incredible. Prices for vats, saunas and baths in Yasinya are much lower compared to Bukovel and Dragobrat, and the quality of service is no worse.

Those who intend to visit Yasinya during the Christmas and New Year holidays will have a unique chance to see the colourful Hutsul Christmas traditions live.

Where to stay in Yasinya?

The village of Yasinya can offer tourists and holidaymakers a huge number of accommodation options.

However, despite the abundance of options, you should book accommodation in Yasinya in advance, especially when it comes to the Christmas and New Year holidays. The excitement at this time is simply incredible.

The lion’s share of those who live in Yasinya during the ski season are regular visitors to the nearby Dragobrat and Bukovel slopes. Thus, they significantly save their holiday budget due to affordable prices for accommodation in Yasinya.

The cost of rooms in hotels in Yasinya starts from 500-600 UAH per night. You can significantly save on accommodation in the village of Yasinya by using the option in the private sector, where you can find a huge number of manors in and around the village. Prices here start at 250 UAH per day. Another advantage of the private sector is the availability of a kitchen for self-catering, which, in my opinion, allows you to achieve double savings in your holiday budget.
