What is unique about Vyshkovo?

In the central park of Vyshkovo, there is a pedestal of the sacred bird Turul.

In addition to the remains of the castle, the village has a defensive Gothic church dating back to 1270 with a painted wooden ceiling dating back to 1789.

Today, at the foot of the castle hill in Vyshkovo, there are buildings of a defunct metallurgical plant. In Soviet times, mercury was extracted from the volcanic interior of Varkhedi. Climbing the mountain, you can see the abandoned mines and stone placers – a natural building material – and at the top, a site well chosen by medieval architects to build a guardian castle.

The temperature in Vyshkovo is now:

21.0o C   |   69.9o F

Вишківський замок

The village of Vyshkovo is home to the remains of another powerful medieval Transcarpathian castle. The fortress was first mentioned in historical sources in 1271. The castle was built by brothers Mick and Istvan Csepa from the Gunt-Pazman family. The land for its construction was given to them by the Hungarian King Laszlo IV. They decided to build the castle in a very convenient place from a defensive point of view on the Várhegy Mountain (translated from Hungarian as “castle mountain”). From a height of 589 metres, the castle controlled the “salt route”. During 1300-1350, Vyshkovo Castle was the centre of the Maramorosh County. However, soon all the functions of protecting the “salt route” were transferred to the more powerful neighbouring Khust Castle, and Vyshkovo Castle began to gradually decline.
