Gothic church in the village of Danylovo

In the small village of Danylovo, Khust district, Transcarpathian region, with a population of 1800 inhabitants, there is the tallest of all the Gothic wooden churches in Transcarpathia – St Nicholas. Its ploughshare-covered tower is 35 metres high. This unique church was built in 1779, when most of the neighbouring villages already had similar churches, so the craftsmen had something to take an example of harmonious composition from. An inscription on the door of the church reminds us of the date of construction. In 2005, St Nicholas Church was handed over to the Greek Catholic community, which had not held services here since 1920. After a long break, the Greek Catholics held their first service in this church on 3 April 2005, when the whole world said goodbye to Pope John Paul II.

Detailed description of the attraction

Just below the main entrance to the church is a stone cross, erected in 1914 with the money of the villagers who emigrated to America.

As late as the 1980s, it was possible to see the frescoes made in 1828 by Joseph Kronmeyer. However, due to rainwater seeping through the leaky roof, the paintings faded. Only fragments (nine icons) remain of the eighteenth-century Baroque altar. The bell tower stands nearby. It is used by the Orthodox religious community, whose new church looks down on the exquisite wooden miracle.

Around the church was once a village cemetery. Behind the church is the grave of the priest Yevhenii Azarii, who served in the church until 1920. He, the father of seven children, was tortured by local “Bolsheviks” who returned from revolutionary Russia full of communist ideas. His descendants were sent to Stalin’s camps and Siberia.

In 2011-2012, St Nicholas Church and the nearby bell tower were restored. Every year this masterpiece attracts tourists interested in wooden sacred architecture.
