Church of St Nicholas in the village of Husnyi
In Husnyi, there is a preserved Boyko three-storey wooden church of St Nicholas, which was built of spruce in 1655. The date of construction is carved on the church’s log cabin. Compared to the church in Uzhok, this is a slightly different type of Boyko church, with a monumental shape of the central octagonal dome dominating its composition. The towers above the narthex and the altar area are two-stage, square in plan, so the church seems heavy at first glance.
It is only after walking around the church and choosing a convenient point that you begin to understand that the peculiar forms of the monument are symmetrical and beautiful. The log cabins of the eastern part and the Babynets are covered with tetrahedral tent tops with one crease. A gallery is arranged above the narthex of the church, and a frame tier of the bell tower is above it. As in other monuments of Boyko architecture, the building is surrounded by a perimeter porch on the crowns of the log house.

A little history of St Nicholas Church in the village of Husnyi
In the 1930s, a talented Transcarpathian artist Zoltan Sholtes was a priest in the churches of Uzhka and Husnyi. He liked to depict wooden churches and picturesque Carpathian nature in his landscapes. Several icons painted by Zoltan Sholtes have survived to this day in the church of Husnyi village.
This church was almost completely restored in 1971-1972. Unfortunately, in the 1990s it was completely covered with tin. However, the metal did not overcome the charm of this place.
According to the researcher Mykhailo Syrokhman, this is the only wooden church in the Uzhanskyi district characterised by the Boyko symmetry of the tops.
A few kilometres away from Uzhok, at the headwaters of the Zhdenivka River, is the small village of Husnyi in the Uzhhorod district of Transcarpathian region. There is a stony road leading to the village, with a cliff hanging over it on the right side and a stream rushing down on the left. The road goes up all the time, travellers go kilometre after kilometre, but, to their great surprise, they do not feel tired or the passage of time – these categories in the mountains fade into the background, the fantastic mountain beauty distracts the traveller from them, he simply does not notice them. That’s why travellers are surprised to see houses that have appeared around a bend, and have just been 5 kilometres away – it seems to you that distance in the mountains is measured differently than on the plain, that here it looks like shagreen leather. It is not surprising that a highlander will never say that the distance to the village is 5 kilometres, he will simply say “a few kilometres”.
