Turyi Remety

The village of Turyi Remety is known for its French culinary traditions. In the village cafe, you can enjoy frog legs and turtle soup. The fact is that in the first half of the XIX century, French soldiers of Napoleon’s army were captured in the village. Most of them, amazed by the beauty of the Carpathians and our girls, started families here and stayed forever in Transcarpathia. According to legend, the Remets were monks who lived in a cave monastery on Mount Magura. The first part of the name comes from the name of the Turya River. Its population is over three thousand people.

What to see in the village of Turyi Remety?

Turyi Remety is famous for its interesting sights and exotic culinary traditions. You should start your exploration of the village with a bas-relief dedicated to the postman Fedir Feketi, which is located on the wall of the local Orthodox church. Near this church is an interesting old cemetery with cast-iron monuments. In the nineteenth century, there was an iron foundry in the village. Most likely, the sculpture of Hercules in Uzhhorod Castle was cast in the village of Turya Remeta. Two dates (of construction and reconstruction) are engraved on the church: 1616 and 1990 respectively.

In the village of Turya Remeta, there is a Roman Catholic church built in 1885. Nearby is a two-storey building of a former brewery. Now it is a kind of museum of milling. On the ground floor, there are three milling units made in Austria (1896), Czech and Soviet. On the second floor, you can see a real engineering marvel – a huge flour grinding machine supported by fragile-looking bamboo poles, as only they could withstand the vibration of a working mill.

It is from the city of Perechyn that you should start your trip. In the city centre, turn right. Eight kilometres after the bridge over the Uzh river, you will come to a large village called Turyi Remety.
