Excursion around the city of Tyachiv
It won’t take long to explore the city’s main attractions. In the very centre of Tyachiv, there are two ancient churches located next to each other. First, you should visit the Catholic Church of Saint King Istvan, which was built in 1780. You can see a clock on the church tower. However, it is not real, but painted – this is a common practice in Transcarpathia, as not every community could afford to buy an expensive clock. The clock above the temple served not only to tell the congregation the time, but also to remind them that every moment could be the last in a person’s life.
Nearby is the oldest but most elegant church in Tyachiv – a stone Reformed church with a three-tiered bell tower. It has a real clock, and a very old one at that. Inside the church, you can admire the beautiful coffered polychrome ceiling of 1748. In addition, the church has two steles with the names of the parishioners who died in the First and Second World Wars. The church was founded in the XIII century by King Ladislav the Great. At that time it was Roman Catholic. In 1556, the church became a Reformed church. Until 1944, it housed the largest library in the Maramorosh region. The walls and windows of the church have been preserved since the 13th century. The Reformed Church looks very beautiful in May, when chestnuts blossom near it.
Near the Reformed Church there is a bronze bust of the artist Shimon Hollosy, who lived in Tyachiv since 1914. Also nearby you can see the spire of the Greek Catholic church, which was built in 1852 in honour of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is located near the bus station. In 1948, after the Soviet authorities banned the Greek Catholic Church, the church was transferred to the Orthodox community. Today, Greek Catholics hold services there again.
On the way to this church, on Lajos Kossuth Street, there is a monument to Lajos Kossuth (1802-1894), a prominent Hungarian statesman, revolutionary and lawyer, prime minister and president of Hungary during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-1849.
These are the main tourist attractions of Tyachiv.
