Ghost of the Knight of Bronkivskyi Castle
Once upon a time, there were knights who lived in the Bronkivskyi Castle and robbed the surrounding villages. A knight named Brynda led a gang of robbers in armour. He had a horse with three legs, but even on three legs it rode so fast through the mountains that no other horse could catch up with it. The horseshoes of Brynda’s horse were attached to his hooves backwards so that no one could follow his path.
The castle had a large courtyard and underground passages where Brynda and his knights hid the loot. The king decided to destroy the lair of the robber knights. He thought for a long time about how to expel Brynda, and decided to outwit the robbers. He ordered the people to gather livestock and birds from all the surrounding villages: sheep, goats, cows, pigs, ducks, geese, and chickens. Candles were tied to the horns of cows and oxen. When it got dark, the candles were lit, and the people, armed, drove all this different-voiced herd to the castle with a terrible noise. The cattle roared so loudly that Brynda, hearing the terrible noise, was frightened and said to his wife: “I understand many languages, but I cannot understand this one I hear.” He jumped into his saddle in fear and ran away. He flew from the castle to Mount Vodytsia and landed on a large stone slab. To this day, you can still see the traces of a three-legged horse on that slab – the traces of three horseshoes. The other robbers, seeing that the ataman had escaped, also ran away into the forests. Angry people destroyed the robbers’ lair, and since then the castle has been in ruins.
It is said that sometimes at night local foresters see a white knight on a white horse with three legs against the full moon.
