It is worth starting your acquaintance with Vorokhta village with the private museum of the Zaretsky family, the Extravaganza of the Carpathian Spirit. It opened its doors to visitors recently – on 8 November 2023. Here you can learn more about the traditional life of the Hutsuls, represented by scarves and embroidered towels, berbenits, shirts, keptsars, a loom and many other interesting exhibits from a century ago.
The real calling card of Vorokhta is the majestic stone viaducts for the railway. They were built back in the days of Austria-Hungary in 1894-1895 by Italian prisoners. These giants, more than 100 metres long, are one of the longest stone bridges in Europe and are a favourite photo spot for tourists and holidaymakers in the village.
Another must-see attraction in Vorokhta is the wooden Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, built in 1615 (according to other sources, in the 18th century), which was built without a single nail on a stone foundation. The interior of the church has preserved 19th-century paintings. Next to the church is a bell tower with a small museum. Not far from the church is a service chapel that has survived two demolitions, the last of which was carried out in 1940 by the Soviet authorities. The community of the village revived this monument after independence in 1997.
After sightseeing in Vorokhta, you should definitely visit the local souvenir market. This is a great place to shop with a wide selection of unique Hutsul handicrafts, honey, mushrooms, berries, homemade wine, traditional local cheeses, etc. Unlike shops and shopping centres, this souvenir market offers bargaining with the locals, which can help you save money.
For skiing enthusiasts, in addition to the slopes of Vorokhta, you can go skiing in the village of Tatariv, in the city of Yaremche, and visit the Yablunytsia and Bukovel ski resorts near the village.
