Christianity in Transcarpathia appeared in the first century ad. It came here with trade from Rome and then from Byzantium. Graves with Byzantine crosses indicate that the white Croats already during the rule of the Avars in the VII-VIII centuries not only knew Christianity, but also adhered to its traditions.

Римській церкві доводилось діяти на Закарпатті в непростих умовах. З нею асоціювались іноземні гнобителі, богослужіння на латині було незрозумілим місцевому населенню, а католицькі свята і звичаї сприймались як чужі. Проти них виступали православні священики, а з часом і прогресивна частина уніатського духовенства та інтелігенції. In the late 80’s of the IX century, traveling Potassiamand having found Christians in the historical Transcarpathia, the disciples of the Slavic enlighteners Cyril and Methodius legitimized them, established themselves in the faith and gave them a hierarchy. With their participation, the first Christian churches were founded in the region temples and monasteries, which later became centers of culture, Slavic writing and Church literature.

After coming to Pannonia and creating a state on the Danube Hungarians they adopted from the Slavs of the region the way of managing, the form of management and Christianity of the Eastern rite.
