Brown Bear Rehabilitation Center
The number of brown bears in Ukraine reaches about 300 individuals. A certain number of these animals are also kept in captivity. In some cases, the clubfoot is kept in captivity in violation of environmental protection legislation. That is why the issue of creating a special rehabilitation center for bears was raised.

History and purpose of the rehabilitation center
The Bear Rehabilitation Center was established in 2011 in the “Synevyr” National Nature Park, which is located in the Mizhhirsky District of the Transcarpathian Region. This is the only such center in Ukraine and the largest in Europe.
The purpose of the activity centers on the rehabilitation of brown bears that have been subjected to cruel treatment, suffered from a natural disaster, and are kept by the state as confiscated animals, the further fate of which is decided in court in connection with the violation of the laws of Ukraine; restoration of their natural population, temporary maintenance of animals that were detained at the border due to violation of environmental legislation, etc.
Features of the national park
The Synevyr Carpathian Bear Reserve is a huge, ecologically clean territory with an area of more than 12 hectares. It is surrounded by an electrified fence. It was not by chance that the Synevyr National Nature Park was chosen for the construction of such a center. Its natural and climatic conditions and location fully meet the needs of brown bears. In the upper part of the center, there are 6 cages and 2 sections for keeping bears of different ages and health conditions. There are also swimming pools and dens. Tourists have the opportunity to observe pinnipeds through special nets and fences.
Conditions for living in the “Synevyr” center
Experienced veterinarians work in the bear rehabilitation center. The workers create all the necessary conditions for the fastest possible development of the bears and restoration of their natural skills. “Play constructions” have been built for pinnipeds to speed up their adaptation to the conditions of their keeping. Special trainings are also conducted so that the bears get used to the nature around them and become more independent from human care. In addition, veterinarians prepare a diet and feeding regimen for each bear individually. The center is currently home to more than nineteen animals.
The fate of the residents of the park
The stories of almost all clubfoot residents of the center are full of suffering and sadness. One of the bears came from the circus. He was trained in an extremely cruel way: the bear cub’s paws were smeared with petroleum jelly and thrown onto a large hot frying pan. Thus, he had to learn to “dance”. Such cruel training was not successful, after which the owners gave him to the center. Some bears have not forgotten their circus talents. Yes, very often you can see how a bear performs some trick. On the territory of the rehabilitation center there is a stand with photos and information about all the bears living here, with their names, age and weight.
