Detailed overview of the village and the church
The first thing you should pay attention to when travelling in Transcarpathia in the Berehove district is the names of the settlements. Since the publication of most books on local history, namely the multi-volume History of Towns and Villages of the Ukrainian SSR and Monuments of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Ukrainian SSR, many settlements in Transcarpathia “changed their surname to a maiden name”. Now they have regained their pre-Soviet names. Take for example the village of Kidosh (three kilometres north-east of the district centre, 895 inhabitants), which was marked as Zmiivka on Soviet maps.
In the village of Kidosh, there is the Church of John the Baptist. An important element in the architecture of the church is the small Romanesque side windows. The main nave partially preserves fresco paintings of the walls of the XIV century: “St Catherine,” “Prayer for the Chalice,” “The Appearance of Christ to Mary,” discovered in 1911. Researchers have noted the delicate pattern and amazing palette of the paintings.
The wooden bell tower near the church was built in the XVIII century. And the legends that locals pass down from generation to generation say that it was here that King Solomon monastery was located.
