Unforgettable places that every tourist should visit
When choosing what to see in Volovets, we recommend paying attention to the local historical and cultural attractions. First of all, this is:
Volovets Church of the Ascension in 1893
The present stone church in Volovets was built on the site of the wooden Boyko church, which was moved here from the old cemetery. The Church of the Ascension was consecrated on 28.11.1893. Major repairs were carried out in 1934. In the same year, the iconostasis was equipped. Until 1946, the church belonged to the Greek Catholic community, and after the liquidation of the Greek Catholic Church by the Soviets, the church was transferred to the Orthodox community.

In 1692, historical sources make the first mention of a church in the village of Abranka, Mukachevo district, Transcarpathian region. In 1733, a wooden church of the Blessed Virgin Mary was already mentioned in this area, which had 3 bells.
The modern Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Abranka was built in 1804. The church is located off the main road on a high bank of a stream that flows through the village.
A relatively new wooden church stands at the entrance to the village of Huklyvy. A real masterpiece of folk architecture (the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit) is hidden a little further, near the turn to Mount Velykyi Verkh. This shrine was built in the 18th century. The architectural style clearly shows elements of Baroque. The building material is spruce wood, river stone, and clay. This masterpiece of Verkhovyna folk architecture is considered to be the oldest in Volovets region.
At the entrance to the village of Pylypets, tourists’ attention is drawn to the monumental wooden Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, built in 1780. The building’s decorative features include a baroque dome and an exquisite arcade. Near the church you can see a two-tiered bell tower (1758).
The uniqueness of this shrine lies in its unchanged appearance since its construction. The iconostasis of the 18th century has been preserved here, which is not common in history. The church is active, and services are regularly held there.
In 2007, Yurii Bedrynets opened the Museum of Wooden Churches in the village of Pylypets at the Aratta Hotel. The museum exposition includes almost 30 models representing examples of sacred architecture of the Transcarpathian and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. Unfortunately, most of the originals of these models no longer exist today. The author of all the museum’s models was the famous folk artist Andrii Horobets. Visits to the hall can be arranged with the hotel administration.
During the Second World War, the Hungarian government built a military defence line in the northeastern Carpathians – the Arpad Line. It consisted of several belts. The first one was in the Carpathian region, to protect the approaches to the main Carpathian watershed ridge, which was called the Hunyadi border. The second one ran along the tops of the main Carpathian ranges and consisted of trenches and dugouts – the so-called St Vasyl’s line. The third – along narrow river valleys and near large settlements, included concrete fortifications and mechanical obstacles – the Arpad Line.
Shypit waterfall and Gymba mountain
As for the best excursion from Volovets, in my opinion, a great addition to a trip to the village itself is a tour to Shypit waterfall with a climb to Mount Gymba, which is located 16 km from Volovets on the outskirts of the village of Pylypets. This wonderful tourist location offers the opportunity to admire the mighty waterfall, buy numerous souvenirs and delicacies in the nearby shops, and in summer take part in the festival of youth subcultures held on Ivan Kupala. At the end of the visit, you can take a chairlift to the top of Mount Gymba, which offers incredible views in clear weather. All this creates excellent conditions for admiring the surrounding mighty Carpathian Mountains.

Features of spring and summer holidays
In spring and summer, Volovets offers a wide variety of recreational options. The most popular among them is undoubtedly mountain hiking. Volovets is a launching pad for many different routes that cover the Borzhava Polonyna. From here you can admire the incredible landscapes of the Carpathians. Experienced guides can offer tourists in Volovets both simple routes for beginners and families with children, and real multi-day exhausting marathons for extreme sports. However, the most popular routes for hiking from Volovets are those that lead to the peaks of Temnatyk (1343 m), Plai (1323 m), Velykyi Verkh (1598 m), Stiy (1681 m), Gemba (Gymba) (1491 m), Bozovo (1095 m) and to the passes of the Verkhovyna watershed. For the convenience and safety of tourists, most of the routes are marked.
For those who do not want to or cannot spend a lot of energy on long hikes in the mountains, mushroom and berry picking excursions in the nearby forests are an alternative option for holidays in Volovets in spring, summer and early autumn. The surrounding virgin forests are a real Klondike for quiet hunting.
For lovers of quiet unity with nature, fishing in local reservoirs and trout farms is a great way to spend time in Volovets in spring and summer.
In the warm season, Volovets is a real paradise for lovers of adrenaline and extreme recreation. At this time, people are actively engaged in cycling, quad biking or horseback riding, and if you go to nearby Pylypets, you can also go paragliding.
Features of rest in autumn and winter
Early autumn is the best time for excursions to the historical and cultural sights of Volovets and its surroundings. It is at this time that the absence of heat and the hype of ski holidays makes walking around the village as comfortable as possible. And thanks to local experienced guides, you will learn a lot about the history, customs and traditions of the local Boikos.
In autumn, Volovets is also a great location for mushroom and berry picking excursions. Thanks to local guides, tourists can gather a huge amount of healing gifts of nature.
In autumn and winter, Volovets is a great place for skiing holidays for beginners. Most skiing fans and pros go to the more popular ski resort of Pylypets.
A significant advantage of the Volovets slopes is that there is no such full house as on Pylypets or Podobovets, which makes skiing safer and easier. These slopes are a good option for beginners who have only recently learnt to ski or snowboard. Unlike Pylypets, it’s less crowded and therefore much safer. The ski season in Volovets usually starts in December and lasts until April. Prices for ski lifts in Volovets are extremely affordable.
Another great way to relax and improve your health in Volovets in autumn and winter is to visit the local saunas, baths and especially the vats. I would advise you to visit the Volovets vats first of all. They are easier to tolerate than saunas or baths, and the fresh air and the view of the Carpathians make this procedure simply incredible.
Those who intend to visit Volovets during the Christmas and New Year holidays will have a unique chance to see the colourful Boyko Christmas traditions live.
