Detailed description of the church of St John the Baptist
The Church of St John the Baptist differs in its offerings from the churches in Uzhok and Husnyi. It has a more complex silhouette of three towers. The tower above the Babynets is taller than the central one, turned into a bell tower, but does not violate the proportions of the Boyko church. The log cabins are significantly tilted inwards. The roof of the church is covered with tin, and the walls are covered with wooden clapboard. All three parts of the church are covered with a hipped roof with three folds. Above the flat ceiling of the narthex there is a gallery-gavroche, which is open to the central part of the church.
The interior of the Church of St. John the Baptist contains works of easel tempera painting of the 16th and 18th centuries. The icons “Crucifixion” by Ivan Vyshenskyi in 1678 and “Sacrifice of Abraham” by Ivan Shchyretskyi in 1679 attract attention with their naive realism, sincerity of artistic expression, and their uncomplicated narrative form. They belong to the folk style of Transcarpathian painting, where each iconographer tried to fill his works with civic pathos. Icons of this trend lose their purely ecclesiastical character, arouse interest and attention to the person. Shchyretskyi introduced the Carpathian landscape, which was close to him, into the composition of the icon. The simplicity of the expression of feelings and at the same time the naive significance of each image speak of the deeply folk character of this painting.
