Palace of the Counts of Schönborn (Beregvar Castle)

In 1840, the owners of the Mukachevo-Chinadiyovo domain of Countess Shenborn built a wooden house – a summer residence in the Beregvar tract, and in 1890 a romantic castle in the Neo-Renaissance style was built in its place. The design of the palace contains a kind of symbolism. The components of the astronomical year are taken as a basis. The number of windows equals the number of days in a year, the number of rooms equals the number of weeks, and the number of entrance doors equals the number of months.

Architectural features of the Schönborn Palace

The architectural style of the villa is similar to the French castles of the time of Louis XIV. Before us is an architectural masterpiece that organically fit into the landscape and nature. Towers and chimneys of various shapes add tracery to the composition of the castle. One of the towers crowns the castle chapel with a bell, the second, in the northeastern part of the palace, resembles the Koryatovych tower in Mukachevo Castle.

The interior of the castle has also been preserved. If you go inside, you can walk along the wooden steps used by the Schönborns. On the ceiling you can see an amazing chandelier in the shape of a female figure made of deer horns. Once upon a time, such chandeliers were called melusins. An authentic fireplace from the times of Austria-Hungary has been preserved in the castle.

Beregvar Castle is located in the center of a wonderful English park, where there are not only trees that are found in the region, but also various exotics. About 40 species of rare plants are represented here, including Canadian fir, boxwood, Japanese cherry, catalpa, pink beech and others. All this, perfectly combined, complements and emphasizes the beauty of the natural landscape, successfully chosen for the construction of the castle. The pond on the territory of the park repeated the borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. And the water from the spring located near the lake is attributed with rejuvenating properties.

At one time, one of the main ideologues of Nazism, Hermann Goering, was interested in Beregvar Castle. In 1939, he tried to purchase the estate and even held negotiations with the government of Augustyn Voloshyn on this matter.

History of Schönborn castle

Although Beregvar Castle does not have a very ancient history, it also has its own legends and mysterious history. Once the owner of the castle was a very jealous Count Schönborn. He all the time suspected his wife of adultery, although she was faithful and did not give any reason for suspicion. Every time he went hunting, he thought that at that time his wife was cheating on him, so he returned very quickly without hunting anything, trying to find his wife in the arms of his lover. Once the count was shot by a gypsy woman who offered him fortune-telling. The count asked the gypsy if his wife was cheating on him. She suggested that he test his woman on the rock of fidelity, which was not far from the castle. If a woman descends from this cliff unscathed, then she is faithful. The count told his wife about it. She agreed to undergo this test. Despite the significant risk to her life, she was not afraid and descended from the cliff unharmed. But after that, she fell out of love with the count, who so easily put her life at risk, and left him forever. After the death of the countess, her ghost settled in the castle and wanders its corridors, scaring visitors.

Mukachevo castle of the Shenborns today

Today, the sanatorium “Karpaty” has been located in Beregvar Castle since 1946. The sanatorium specializes in the treatment of diseases of the nervous system, metabolism and cardiovascular system. You can get to the sanatorium by train. Nearby is the “Sanatorium Karpaty” station, built back in the days when the castle was owned by the Shenborns. The station looks like a small fairy-tale castle. A pedestrian bridge stretches from it to the territory of the sanatorium above the highway.

In the middle of the 20th century, the famous American artist Rockwell Kent rested in the “Karpaty” sanatorium, who was very impressed by the beauty of the Carpathian nature and the elegance of the palace’s architecture. Once an artist said that it is impossible to live in Transcarpathia and not be an artist.
