For many centuries, the main place of residence of the famous Hungarian noble dynasty of Pereni was Transcarpathia.
In the Middle Ages, this family became noble. Initially, this dynasty had the surname Dobosz. Later, after King András II granted the Peren area in the Abauja comitatus in 1240, the family took the surname Pereni. Starting from 1321, about forty representatives of the Pereni family became Najupans. One of them was Sigmund (Zhigmond) Pereni (1783-1849).
In 1814, the noblemen’s assembly elected him najupan of the Berezhsky comitat. He was the most progressive representative of the Pereni family, actively involved in charity, and was loved by people. Thanks to Sigmund Pereni, the Vynohradiv The first hospital was built. He donated his own land to the city, on which the hospital buildings were later constructed.
Baron Sigmund took an active part in the events of the 1848-1849 revolution. He particularly distinguished himself in the work of the State Assembly in Debrecen. At a meeting of this assembly on 14 April 1849, decisions were made to overthrow the Habsburgs and proclaim Hungary’s independence. Sigmund Pereni was among the chairmen of this meeting. For this, after the defeat of the revolution, an Austrian court sentenced him to death in 1849. The sentence was carried out in the city of Pest on 24 October 1849.
A memorial plaque was erected in memory of Baron Sigmund on the facade of the Pereni Palace in Vynohradiv.
