The tallest building in the city is the church on Ferenc Rákóczi Square. This church was built in the XII century.
In 1846, the church was reconstructed, after which it acquired the features of the pseudo-Gothic style.
In front of the main portal of the church is a bronze bust of King Istvan the Holy (997-1038), the founder of the Hungarian state.
Behind the cathedral, in the shade of chestnut trees, is another landmark of Berehove, the Count’s Yard. This is a long one-story mansion of the Transylvanian prince Gabor Betlen (1629). The former stables and granary have also been preserved.
Now it houses an amateur local history museum with 4 halls (director Ivan Shepa), which can be visited for a nominal fee.
A walk through the old city center is a must in the program of visiting Berehove. On Koshuta Square (formerly Verbevtsia Square), among the pretty two-story villas, there is a huge building of the former imperial court, built back in 1908.
Ferenc Jablonsky, the architect, did not restrain his creative impulses – there was even a fencing hall here. Today, the building of the imperial court houses the Transcarpathian Hungarian Pedagogical Institute. To the right of the entrance is a memorial plaque to Lajos Kossuthi.
Opposite is the largest church in the city, designed to accommodate up to 1,100 worshippers at a time. It is a Lutheran church that was built in 1775 and rebuilt in 1897 and 1922.
The church still has a working organ of the Rieger company (1899). The church has 3 folk choirs.
Koshut Square is completed by the monumental facade of the House of Culture, an old synagogue building that was rebuilt in Soviet times.
A memorial plaque to the victims of the Holocaust is installed on this building.
Nearby is Heroes’ Square, the former city market, the first city hotel Oroslan (Lion’s Court, 17th century), and the Hungarian Folk Theater. Quiet side streets are lined with mansions of the XIX-XX centuries. The city center is connected to the railway station (1884) by Széchenyi Street. There are many elegant buildings of the late XIX century, among them the former Royal and Donat hotels, the Kubovich and Meigs houses.
A Ukrainian gymnasium decorated with memorial plaques, opened in 1895, reminds us that we are still in Ukraine (4 Stefanyka Street).
Many guests of the city come to Berehove to improve their health in the waters of the 50-meter geothermal pool on the territory of the Zakarpattia sports base. Mineralized thermal waters come here through boreholes 1680 meters deep. The outdoor pool can be used all year round – you can swim in the warm water even in winter. Bathing here treats diseases of the skin, nervous and cardiovascular systems. There is a freestyle ski jump, a sports ground, a rehabilitation center, and a sauna nearby. The state thermal pool has a hotel.
The complex was opened relatively recently – in 2003. It is an ideal alternative to old sanatoriums. Thanks to its modern design and high standards of service, you are guaranteed comfortable living conditions. The pools of the complex are filled with thermal water from wells about 1200 meters deep. The water in the pools is completely renewed in a maximum of three days. The water from the wells reaches a temperature of 56-58°C, but before entering the pools it is cooled to a comfortable 25-40°C. Underground thermal waters are transparent, but when interacting with oxygen, they acquire a brownish tint. The specific smell of thermal waters is due to the presence of hydrogen sulfide in their composition, which is oxidized and immediately decomposes upon reaching the surface.
