Old-timers say that in ancient times, the governor of Berehove, the king (zhupan) Andrii Dobosh, had a surprisingly beautiful daughter Ilka. A lot of noble boys wooed her, and especially the young good knight Valentyn and the owner of the Nyalab castleΒ (now the ruins of this castle are located in the village of Korolevo Berehove district) tried to please the beauty. For political reasons, Dobosh himself wanted Nyalab as his son-in-law, and Ilka was wholeheartedly in love with the young knight Valentyn.
The father loved his daughter very much, so he did not want to force her to marry. He acted wisely, deciding that only a battle would show who would become Ilka’s groom. It was at that time that a knightly tournament was taking place in the town of Beregsas (now Berehove) Valentyn and Nyalab reached the final of the competition. Their strength in the fight was equal. Time after time, after being struck with a spear, they remained on horseback. Suddenly, Valentyn managed to knock his opponent out of the saddle.
As promised, Ilka married her beloved, but Nyalab could not accept his loss. The proud owner of the castle vowed that he would get Ilka at any cost and started a rebellion against the government. He destroyed and plundered villages and towns and terrified people from all over the area.
The uprising grew so large that the king himself had to gather an army to fight the rebel. Valentyn also went to fight the robber. This was used by Nyalab, who insidiously attacked Valentyn’s estate and kidnapped Ilka. Nyalab quickly ran away with Ilka to his castle. Valentyn, on his way to the castle, turned round and saw smoke coming from his estate. He immediately returned and began to catch up with the treacherous Nyalab. But the worst thing happened, the dastardly robber realised that he would never get Ilka and killed her in front of her husband. After the crime, he tried to escape and jumped with his horse into the Verke River. However, getting tangled in the reeds, the horse and Nyalab drowned in the river.
The beautiful Ilka was buried at the place of her death – on the banks of the Verke River. Each soldier of the great royal army gathered dirt in his helmet and poured it on her grave. This is how the Transcarpathia the barrow of the Beauty.
