Velikiy Berezny

Velikiy Berezny does not have the opportunity to show off a large number of architectural monuments, but it can give an idea of a typical Transcarpathian city of district significance.

In addition, the village is a local educational center. There are two secondary schools, a music school and a vocational school.

As of 2020, the population of the urban-type village of Velikiy Berezny was only 7,632 people. Its area is only 4.1 km2. The village is located at an altitude of 210 meters above sea level.

History of Veliky Berezny

The first mention of the urban-type village of Velikiy Berezny in written sources dates back to 1409. Among the state tax lists as of 1427, it was said that Berezne was a rural settlement at that time, had 33 peasant yards and was in the possession of the Uzhhorod Dominion of the Drugets Counts. At the end of the 18th century, Slovak immigrants settled in Berezno, who were engaged in crafts here. In 1894, a railway was built here, which was a very important event for the economic development of the village. In the 1920s and 30s of the 20th century, Velikiy Berezny was the district administrative center. Since 1947, Velikiy Berezny has become an urban-type settlement and district center. In Soviet times, Velikiy Berezny became an important local industrial center. In the 1980s, a bread factory, a regional food processing plant, a juice plant, an industrial plant and other enterprises operated here. Today, Velikiy Berezny is an urban-type village within the consolidated Uzhhorod district.

For hiking lovers, a good option will be the Yavirnyk mountain shelter, located near Veliky Berezny and the village of Rusky Mochar, at a distance of 2 kilometers from the Yavirnyk mountain (1017 meters). Such a type of housing as a tourist shelter in Ukraine has just begun its revival these days. It is hard to imagine that a hundred years ago there were more than 40 of them, but most of them were destroyed during the Second World War and during the Soviet era. Yavirnyk is the only completely preserved and recently completely rebuilt and modernized shelter in the Ukrainian Carpathians. In fact, it is a kind of hostel at a height. This is convenient for hiking with the whole family with children, as it allows you to take less hiking equipment with you. It can accommodate 23 tourists at the same time, there are 6 hostel-type rooms: 2 double, 1 triple, 1 six-bed and 1 ten-bed. The shelter is equipped with showers and toilets for public use, which are located in a separate room. Near the shelter there is enough space for tents, there is a large gazebo, tables and barbecues.

Fans of skiing prefer the guest house “Teremok” in the village of Vyshka, only 100 meters from the ski slope. There is a wonderful sauna here. And in summer, guests can relax in the beautiful garden or swim in the outdoor pool on the territory of the guest house.

The wonderful hotel “Edelweiss” is located in the village of Sil. This large hotel complex is equipped with a gym, table tennis, billiards, a Finnish sauna, an outdoor pool, an indoor pool, hydromassage, an infrared cabin, a volleyball and mini-football court, and a massage room. 50 meters from “Edelweiss” there is a beach on the bank of the Uzh River. In winter, the hotel complex has an ice rink and there is a shuttle service to the ski lifts in the village of Vyshka.

Prices in the hotels of Veliko Berezhnnshchyna are moderate. In the mountain shelter “Yavirnyk” rest is offered at a cost of 300 hryvnias per day for the first person. The tariff for staying in tents on the territory of the shelter is UAH 120.

Where is it located and how to get to Velikiy Berezny

Located in the village Velikiy Berezny in the northwestern part of Transcarpathia on the right bank of the Uzh River. Highway H13 Lviv-Uzhhorod passes through the village. It is only 42 kilometers from Veliky Berezny to Uzhgorod, and 2 kilometers to the Ukrainian-Slovak border from here. There is a regular railway connection between Lviv and Velikiy Berezny using the Lviv-Solotvyno train. Also, electric trains that go to Uzhgorod, Mukachevo and Syanki stop in the village. The village is small, so you won’t find city buses here. However, there are two taxi services in Veliky Berezny.
