Pedestrian zone in the center of Mukachevo

When visiting the city, its inspection will be incomplete without a walk through the historical part: the pedestrian streets of Dukhnovich and Ilona Zrini, the Latoritsa embankment, the squares of Ivan Fedorov or Cyril and Methodius with a monument to the founders of Russian writing. A huge number of local attractions are concentrated in a relatively small area of the historical center, which are especially pleasant to see in the spring, when everything is in bloom. But at any other time of the year, an excursion into the culture of the city will allow you to immerse yourself in its spirit, immerse yourself in antiquity and closely join European architecture. And after the tourist hunger is satisfied, you should go to a cozy cafe to drink a cup of aromatic Transcarpathian coffee. In addition, any guidebook will tell you that the central square also serves as the venue for the “Cherven Vino” festival, where the most famous local producers present their products every year.

Jelenleg a fiával él, aki sokáig Gödöllőn dolgozott. A lánya Csehországban él.

Habsburg liberation of Hungary
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
The Ottomans ruled most of Hungary since 1541 when the Ottoman Army captured Buda. In 1552 the strategic forts of Szolnok and Várad also fell to the Ottomans, however the defenders of Eger heroically defeated the far superior Ottoman Army (2000 defenders vs 50,000 Ottomans). Most of formal Hungary was occupied, and the Principality of Transylvania was established as a vassal state of the Ottomans. During the Ottoman occupation, the population of Hungary decreased by 15%, vast lands became unpopulated, and food plains became marshes. Hungarians fled to the woods and marshes, and formed many guerilla bands. However, some parts of the economy flourished. In the huge unpopulated areas, townships bred cattle that were herded to south Germany and northern Italy - in some years they exported 500,000 head of cattle. Wine was traded to the Czech lands, Austria and Poland.

The Ottoman Army led by Mustafa suffered a catastrophic defeat in 1683, near Wien. After this victory, Habsburg and Polish troops marched into Hungary. By the end of the century, the Ottomans were forced to give up almost all of Hungary. The last area, the Banat was liberated in 1718.

The general impression of Mukachevo, the sights and natural landscapes of the city are far from being limited to one architecture. Therefore, every traveler simply needs to climb the mountain, swing over the cliff on a swing and look around the magnificent panorama that opens from here. Like most of the local highlands, Lovachka is of volcanic origin. Its highest point is 297 m above sea level, while the city center is located at about 126 m.Therefore, it is difficult to find a better vantage point. From here you can see everything worth seeing in Mukachevo.

Mini sculptures and monuments

Tourists visiting the city in the very near future need to go on an excursion dedicated to the review of mini-sculptures and larger monuments. Most of them were built in 2015 by the Uzhgorod sculptor Mikhail Kolodko. For example, next to the mayor’s office there is a figure of Ferenc Rakoczi, and near the embankment there is a miniature monument to Celt. Those wishing to join the history and culture of the city will find here the sculptural images of Ilona Zrini and Svyatoslav Vakarchuk. You also cannot pass by geese, a chimney sweep or a gypsy with a broom. It is especially interesting to visit such an excursion with children. They learn that an artisan Bertalon Tovt lived in Mukachevo, who is engaged in improving the work of chimneys in cooperation with his permanent companion, the cat. It is believed that those who see a representative of such a proud profession will become happy and fortunate. And if today it is difficult to meet them, then the monument is quite capable of replacing a real chimney sweep.
