The Yosyp Bokshai Transcarpathian Art Museum was founded in 1948. It is located in the building of the former comitatus administration (zhupanat), an architectural monument built in 1809 in the style of classicism. The museum contains about 4500 works of art representing painting, graphics, sculpture and decorative and applied arts by prominent national and foreign artists. A significant part of the exhibited paintings is devoted to the works of the founders of the Subcarpathian school of fine arts – Adalbert Erdelyi and Yosyp Bokshai, as well as their talented students Fedir Manailo, Andriy Kotska, Zoltan Sholtes and Ernest Kontratovych.

The museum also houses paintings by famous artists of our region – Havrylo Hluk, Anton Kashshai and Vasyl Gabda. Graphic masterpieces are represented by the works of Vilmosh Berets and Shandor Petka, and sculptures – by Vasyl Svyda, Ivan Brovdi, Ivan Harapka. The museum’s collection includes works by Ukrainian artists Ilya Brodlakovych-Vyshenskyi, Taras Shevchenko, Serhii Vasylkovskyi, Opanas Slastion, Ivan Trush, and Oleksandr Murashko.
The regional art museum features works by Russian masters of the 19th century – Orest Kiprensky and Vasyl Tropinin – and paintings by the travelling artist Volodymyr Makovsky. The exposition offers visitors the opportunity to get acquainted with the works of outstanding landscape painters Ivan Shishkin, Ilya Ostroukhov, Mikhail Klodt, Ivan Aivazovsky, Pavel Korin and others.
The Department of Western European Art presents paintings by artists from Italy, Holland, France, Germany and Austria of the 17th-20th centuries. Among them are paintings by Francesco Albani, Cornelius-Pieters Begh, Philip Jacob Palm the Younger, Lembert Lombard, Abraham Dembl, and Samuel van Hoogstasten. The central place among the paintings of Hungarian art is occupied by the study for the painting “Christ before Pilate” by Mihály Munkácsy, a prominent Transcarpathian master of the 19th century who painted in the style of realism and was a native of Mukachevo. The museum also features works by his student and follower Imre Revesz.
The museum exhibits several works by I. Hrabar, which the author donated back in 1955 on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the reunification of Transcarpathia from the Ukrainian SSR.
The museum’s exposition is constantly updated, freeing up space for exhibitions of contemporary artists.
The museum is located at 3 Zhupanatska Square, Uzhhorod, and is open to visitors every day except Monday, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

He was born and lived all his life in Uzhhorod. He graduated with a gold medal from Uzhhorod School No. 1 named after Taras Shevchenko (now Uzhhorod Lyceum named after Taras Shevchenko). He studied at the History Department of UzhNU, graduating with honours in 2009. He worked as a senior researcher at the Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Life, a lecturer at the East European Slavic University.
