After the need for the defensive function of the Uzhgorod landmark disappeared, a seminary was established in the castle. Today, the castle is home to a local history museum, which is definitely worth a visit as part of a tour of Uzhgorod. There is also a restaurant and a Carpathian wine tasting room on the castle grounds.

Legends and stories of Uzhgorod Castle

Do you know what the walls of Uzhgorod Castle tell you? In the XVII century, Uzhgorod Castle was owned by Captain Druget. He had a beautiful daughter. Her eyes were as blue as the sky, and her hair was the colour of the bright sun. In those days, the Polish troops of Prince Lubomirski swept across the Transcarpathia, getting closer and closer to Uzhgorod. One of the nobles went to the city on a secret mission. It is not known how, but Druget’s young daughter fell in love with the Pole and told him all the secrets of the castle.

When the angry father found out about his daughter’s betrayal, he immediately ordered her to be walled up alive in the castle wall. Since then, the girl’s soul has not known peace, wandering the corridors of the castle at night as a white shadow. Her moaning can be heard on windy nights. People called the girl’s ghost the white maiden.

This is the legend of city of Uzhgorod, which contains very interesting facts. And this story has the right to exist. Indeed, in the Middle Ages, there was a custom of burying people alive in the walls of a fortress – according to belief, this strengthened its defence capability. Children or virgins were especially often walled up. It was believed that their pure souls would protect the castle. Given the fact that the walls around Uzhgorod Castle were built in 1653-1658, just during the Polish invasion, who knows… Perhaps this legend is based on real events. Or perhaps a barrel or a jug walled up in the corner of the castle makes a sound similar to a groan. In this way, medieval masons took revenge on customers who did not pay for their work well.
