In June 2015 Uzhgorod joined the celebration of the Days of French Culture in Ukraine. On this occasion, sculptor Mykhailo Kolodko created another mini-masterpiece – a bronze Eiffel Tower. The unveiling of this mini-sculpture on 01 June 2015 was attended by the French consul and a large delegation of diplomats. This sculpture became the smallest copy of the Eiffel Tower. The height of the mini-sculpture is only 16 centimetres and it weighs one kilogram.

The location for the new tourist attraction was not chosen by chance. The small Eiffel Tower was placed on the last surviving old lantern in Uzhgorod.

The opening ceremony was made sweet by the most famous Ukrainian confectioner Valentyn Shtefanyo, who treated the French guests to a variety of delicacies.

The mini-tower is located near the Cathedral at 9 Kapitulna Street. (GPS: 48.622905, 22.301648).

A bit of history

The author of the original tower, Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, was a prominent French civil engineer and architect. In addition to the tower, he built more than 200 structures during his lifetime, including bridges, viaducts, railway stations, shops, schools, churches, banks, and casinos. In 1900-1902, he designed a lighthouse on the island of Dzharylgach (Ukraine, Kherson region), and developed its openwork metal frame in Paris.

The legend of the bronze mini-replica of the Eiffel Tower

An interesting legend associated with this mini-sculpture is described by Nadiya Popadiuk in her book Uzhgorod – the World Capital of Mini-Sculptures. According to legend, in 1898, Gustave Eiffel personally designed and built the first iron bridge for pedestrian transport in Uzhgorod. The bridge looked nothing like a modern pedestrian bridge, but rather like a railway bridge. This important piece of urban infrastructure existed until 1944, when German troops blew it up while retreating.

In memory of his stay in Uzhgorod, Gustave Eiffel left a mini-sculpture – a 16-centimetre-high, world’s smallest copy of the legendary Eiffel Tower – which he installed on an old lamppost near the Greek Catholic church in Uzhgorod (the modern Holy Cross Cathedral).
