The mini-sculpture “Allo” was opened on September 17, 2017. It was on this day that Tivadar Puskas was born and 120 years have passed since the establishment of a telephone connection between Uzhgorod and Budapest. This mini-sculpture in the form of a small telephone set was installed at the entrance to the building of the Ukrposhta central branch in Uzhgorod (GPS: 48.623638, 22.295270).
This mini-sculpture is the smallest among more than thirty others in Uzhgorod. The smiths of the sculpture were Stepan Rusnak and Roman Murnyk, and its main author was Mykhailo Kolodko.
At the time of the installation of the mini-sculpture, Mr. Mykhailo lived in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. During the opening ceremony of this mini-sculpture, UzhNU professor Fedir Sandor, after several unsuccessful attempts, called Mykhailo Kolodko, to which he answered: “Hallom! Hello! Fedya, I’m glad that I was able to communicate at all, because in the days of Edison and Puskas, communication was much worse! Today, we can transmit millions of times more information than we could then.

Tivadar Puskas (September 17, 1844-March 16, 1893) was a Hungarian physicist and inventor of the telephone exchange. In January 1878, in the town of New Haven, which is located in the state of Connecticut (USA), the first of its kind and at that time the only telephone exchange in the world was put into operation, the founder of the construction project of which was the Hungarian engineer Tivadar Puskás. According to eyewitness Thomas Edison, Puskas during the station’s tests first used today’s most popular telephone greeting “hello”, which is derived from the Hungarian “hallom”, which translates as “I hear”.
Tivadar Puskas came from a Transylvanian noble family, studied law and electrical engineering. Even before emigrating to the USA, he created his own travel agency, the first and oldest in Central Europe.
His wife, Sofia Fetter von der Lily, lived in Uzhgorod for a long period of time, and then moved to Budapest to Puskas.
An interesting legend about this mini-sculpture is told by Nadiya Popadiuk in her book “Uzhgorod – the world capital of mini-sculptures”. According to legend, the best idea of Tivadar Puskas in his travel agency was the tourist route Budapest – Uzhgorod, as the city on the Uzhgorod was his parents’ favorite vacation spot. And in 1897, with the help of Puskas, a telegraph connection appeared in Uzhgorod, which connected our city with Budapest.
There is a belief that in order for love not to leave you, from the place where this mini-phone is installed, you need to call your loved one and say: “Hallom”.
