Franz Erkel was an outstanding Hungarian composer, pianist, conductor and teacher. Together with Franz Liszt, he initiated the construction of the new building of the Budapest Opera House in 1872, which was completed in 1884, and became its conductor from the opening day.
Erkel’s sons Gyula (1842-1909), Elek (1843-1893), Laszlo (1844-1896) and Sándor (1846-1900) also became musicians.
An interesting legend related to this mini-sculpture is told by Nadiya Popadyuk in her book Uzhhorod – the World Capital of Mini-Sculptures. According to legend, the Uzhhorod Children’s School of Art was founded in 1954 with the assistance of Ferenc Erkel’s great-granddaughter Agnes. The girl considered it her life’s work, in memory of her famous ancestor, to help create similar educational institutions throughout Europe to help develop young talents. Under the guidance of experienced teachers, thousands of students have received art education in Uzhhorod over the years.
