It is no coincidence that Istvan Laudon is associated with the magnolia. It was he who brought this incredible flower, which is comparable in beauty to sakura, to Uzhhorod.
Istvan Laudon (1862-1924) was a well-known teacher, naturalist, and doctor of the Uzhhorod Royal Catholic Gymnasium. He was a philologist by training, but he was very interested in natural history. Laudon travelled extensively.
Istvan Laudon planted unique plants collected during his travels in his garden. Laudon founded a unique arboretum in his garden. The opening of the mini-monument is dedicated to the 130th anniversary of this unique arboretum. In its heyday, the Loudon Garden occupied a large area – from Sobranetska Street to Nezalezhnist Embankment. At that time, it had more than two hundred exotic plants. It was considered one of the best works of park art in Austria-Hungary. Unfortunately, over time, during the active development of the city, the Istvan Laudon Garden has significantly shrunk. Now, in its place is a small park near the Uzhhorod City Children’s Clinical Hospital, where a little more than a dozen trees have survived. Among them are the Lawson cypress and the Canadian hemlock, the largest ginkgo biloba in Ukraine and the oldest in the Transcarpathian region, berry yew, swamp cypress, black pine (Austrian), Japanese cryptomeria, Sulanzha magnolia and forest beech.
