This mini-sculpture was unveiled in the city of Uzhhorod 22 December 2014 to mark the 40th anniversary of the invention of the Rubik’s Cube. This popular puzzle was invented by the famous Hungarian sculptor Erne Rubik in 1974. A year later, in 1975, he patented his invention, calling it the “magic cube”. But it went down in history as a Rubik’s cube. It quickly gained popularity around the world. As early as 1980, every fifth inhabitant of the planet Earth was playing the Rubik’s Cube.
This mini-monument is located near the mini-sculpture “Svobodka” – on the railing of the “consular” stairs to the pedestrian bridge (GPS: 48.621257, 22.297796).

The unveiling of this mini-sculpture was attended by the Consul General of Hungary in Uzhhorod Jozsef Bacskai, sculptor Mykhailo Kolodko and the head of the Department of Tourism of UzhNU Fedir Shandor. At the opening, they cut ribbons in the colours of the flags of Ukraine and Hungary. On the eve of the mini-sculpture’s unveiling, the Consulate General of Hungary in Uzhhorod helped to repair the “consular stairs”. In addition to the mini-sculpture, the area was equipped with other tourist attractions: signs with distances to European cities were placed here.
It took 1 kilogram of bronze to make this mini-masterpiece. It is made according to the standard dimensions of a Rubik’s cube. Symbolically, Mykhailo Kolodko, the author of the sculpture, made it not in Ukraine, but in Hungary – in the city of Debrecen.
The original legend about this mini-sculpture is told by Nadiya Popadiuk in her book Uzhhorod – the World Capital of Mini-Sculptures. According to this legend, in 1976, the Hungarian inventor, sculptor, and professor of architecture Erne Rubik, world-famous for his three-dimensional puzzles and their toys, came to Uzhhorod to present the mechanical Rubik’s Cube. Erne was impressed by the beauty of the architecture of the city on the Uzh. Before returning to Budapest, Ernő Rubik decided to say a symbolic farewell to the city. Standing on the steps of the pedestrian bridge, he took a toy from his pocket – a Rubik’s cube – and threw it into the river with all his might, so that, as he said, he could return to this amazing city once again. Each of the six faces of the cube consisted of nine squares and was painted in one of six colours: red, orange, white, yellow, blue, and green. In the water, the cube immediately lost its colour and turned from plastic to copper. The next day it was found by a local fisherman, and the residents of Uzhhorod decided to install the cube on the railing of the pedestrian bridge, exactly where Erne Rubik stood when he threw it into the water (opposite the Philharmonic).
