The mini-monument to Prince Laborets was erected on 7 May 2016 on the walls of the Uzhgorod fortress. The monument was sponsored by the director of Yazaki Ukraine, Milosz Bosak. The bronze figure of Laborets was stolen in the summer of 2018. Therefore, the authors of the mini-sculpture, Mykhailo Kolodko and Vasyl Kryvanych, moved it closer to the entrance to the castle and fixed it more firmly in its new location (GPS: 48.621081, 22.305645).
Laborets is considered the creator of the Uzhgorod castle and the founder of the city itself Uzhgorod. He was a prince of the Slavic tribe of the White Croats. The name of this prince was first mentioned in the chronicle of Anonymous, Gesta Hungarorum. Historians are still debating whether Prince Laborec really existed in the ninth century or whether he was just a legendary figure. However, most of them are of the opinion that such a prince did exist.

The bronze monument to Prince Laborets is made in the form of a bronze cord twisted around a figure attached to a metal sword in the form of its hilt. This symbolism in the depiction of Laborets is a reminder of the circumstances of his tragic death. After the Hungarian attack on the Uzhgorod castle, Laborets tried to escape. However, a detachment of Hungarian cavalry caught up with the prince. Laborets was taken prisoner and immediately executed. He was tied up and drowned in the Ondava River, which is now called the Laborets and flows through Slovakia.
There are many literary works dedicated to the tragic and heroic fate of Prince Laborets. Bohuslav Nosak-Nezabudov, Anatolii Kralytskyi, Yevhen Fentsyk, Mariia Pidhirianka, Vasyl Hrendzha-Donskyi, and Petro Uhlyarenko wrote about him.
The original legend of the Laborets’ mini-sculpture is told in her book Uzhgorod – the World Capital of Mini-Sculptures by Nadiya Popadiuk. According to the legend, the bronze mini-sculpture of Prince Laborets in the form of a sword was found during the construction of new stone fortifications on the Castle Hill and installed on the central defensive wall as a symbol of the defence of Uzhgorod Castle. It is said that this sword still gives strength to all who touch it.
