At the time of the tragedy, there were 2,224 people on board, of whom 1,514 died. The British ship Carpathia was the first to arrive to help the Titanic. It took on board all 710 surviving passengers of the world’s largest ship. At the time of the tragedy, the Carpathia was almost 100 kilometres away from the Titanic. It took the ship over three hours to reach the wreck. By then, the Titanic had already sank. The fate of the Karpaty itself was not the best. On 17 July 1918, during the First World War, the Carpathia sank as a result of a torpedo attack by a German submarine. However, all passengers and crew members managed to escape.
The Uzhgorod sculpture is hollow inside. If you place a lighted candle inside it, it may seem that the windows are glowing and that it is a real ship. Guides advise to light a candle inside the Karpaty in memory of the victims.
An interesting legend associated with this mini-sculpture was described by Nadiya Popadiuk in her book Uzhgorod – the World Capital of Mini-Sculptures. According to legend, after signing a contract with the British government in 1809 for the transportation of mail, the owner of the Cunard Line shipping company, Samuel Cunard, received an invitation from the governor to a festive ball organised in honour of the opening of the Uzhgorod Zupanat. This invitation was made on a postcard with an image of mountains of incredible beauty and an unusual name for the son of a Canadian timber trader «Carpathians». He was so impressed by the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains that he had a dream to name his ship Carpatia. The business developed very successfully, and Samuel Cunard became a millionaire and father of 9 children. He died in London in 1865 and it was then that the Uzhgorod a mini-sculpture of the Carpathia dream ship was created, and a new cunarder (as the Cunard Line liners were called) named Carpathia was launched on 6 August 1902.
